Starting a new business is one of the most exciting, yet challenging, ventures you’ll ever undertake.
Before you can launch your website, secure a hosting plan, or even design a logo, you face a critical foundational choice: selecting your business name and, crucially, its corresponding domain name.
Your domain is your permanent digital address. It represents your brand in every email, social media link, and marketing campaign. Getting it right is non-negotiable.
Drawing on the web strategy and branding principles we apply to all our client projects, this guide provides the top three actionable tips to help new business owners nail the perfect domain name.
So, here are my Top Three Tips for Choosing the Perfect Domain Name (and Business Name!):
1. Keep it Short, Simple, and Spellable
The primary function of your domain name is to be found and remembered.
Long, complex, or unusual spellings create unnecessary friction and lead to lost traffic and frustrated customers.
The Radio Test:
Imagine you’re telling a potential customer your domain name over the radio or in a loud coffee shop. Could they write it down correctly on the first attempt?
- Avoid:
- Numbers (e.g., *4u*),
- Hyphens (e.g., *best-coffee-shop.co.za*), and
- Obscure spellings (e.g., *Koffee* instead of *Coffee*).
Hyphens are the classic indicator of a secondary choice and are often forgotten.
- Aim for:
- A domain name with fewer than 15 characters,
- No more than three syllables, and
- Clear, universally accepted spelling.
Simplicity is the key to memorability. A simple domain is easy to type, share, and stick in a customer’s mind.
2. Make it Brandable, Not Just Descriptive
Many new business owners choose domains that are overly descriptive, such as “ballitohandymanservices.com.” While this tells the customer exactly what you do, it presents two major problems:
- It’s Limiting:
If you later expand your services beyond handyman work, or decide to operate outside of Ballito, your domain is no longer an accurate fit, forcing a difficult and costly rebrand. - It’s Hard to Market:
These domains are generic and forgettable, making it difficult to stand out from the competition.
Instead, focus on a brandable name.
A brandable name is unique, evocative, and allows your business room to grow and pivot. Think of major companies—many of their names (Google, Apple, Amazon) are unique words or combinations that allowed the brand, not the product, to become the focus.
3. Prioritise the Right Extension (.com Vs. .co.za or .com.au or .co.uk)
The domain extension, or Top-Level Domain (TLD) communicates trust and your geographic focus. For example;
.com
.co.za
.com.au
- The Global Standard: .com
A .com is the undisputed global leader and the default expectation for most users. If your business has any intention of operating internationally or being seen as a major player, securing the .com is essential. - The Local Advantage (TLDs):
If your business is strictly focused on a local market (e.g., South Africa, Australia, or the UK), securing the local extension (like .co.za or .co.uk) is highly beneficial. It immediately signals to local customers that you are a relevant business in their area and can often provide a small boost in local search engine rankings.
Our Recommendation:
Always check for both the .com and your preferred local TLD. If you are targeting a local audience, make the local TLD your primary website address, and consider securing the .com to prevent competitors from taking it.
Your Toolkit: Idea Generation & Availability Checkers
The perfect domain name is often one that is short, brandable, and available. Here are the resources to help you generate ideas and quickly check availability across key regions.
Idea Generation
Stuck for a great name? Use these tools and techniques to kickstart your brainstorming session:
- Thesaurus/Dictionary:
Look up words related to your industry and explore synonyms. Often, a strong synonym is more memorable than the generic industry term. - Naming Tools:
Services like the Wix AI Business Name Generator or Namelix use AI to combine keywords and create unique, brandable suggestions. - Chat GPT Prompting:
Use a prompt like: “Generate 20 unique, short, and brandable business names for a company selling [YOUR PRODUCT/SERVICE] that evoke the feeling of [ADJECTIVE/CONCEPT].”
Domain Availability Checkers
Once you have a shortlist of names, use these registrars to check availability for the extensions most relevant to your target audience.
| Region | Registrar | URL |
|---|---|---|
| South Africa | xneelo | xneelo Domain Checker |
| Australia | Crazy Domains | Crazy Domains Search |
| United Kingdom | Hostinger | Hostinger UK Domains |
